Recently Gucci released a new capsule collection in which they featured the famous Sega gaming font. An attempt at kitsch nostalgia that sadly just equated in a hot mess.
I've previously talked about my love for the Balenciaga Triple S trainers, so I'm no stranger to ugly fashion and in some cases I absolutely love it. It's all about that fine line between quirkiness and straight up hideous. Sadly, in Gucci's case, they were without a doubt venturing in hideous territory.
Something about the unavoidable "GUCCY" lettering scrawled across a bag priced in the thousand pound reigon, just isn't doing it for me. To me it's screaming 'Wembley Market" a loud louder than it's screaming a months wages.
And don't get me started on the bizarre star pattern that from a distance looks like perferated leather to match the over all eyesore look they seem to be going for. It's as though they were trying to tap into a warm sense of nostalgia from childhood favourites like Sonic the Hedgehog, but instead the only memories being awakened are ones of year 8 school bags I've had no choice other than to set on fire.
Alas, that ugly-chic vibe so many brands are trying to nail is a lot harder to successfully pull off than it might seem.Better luck next time Guccy...
